Playing more WH40K now. Found some folks local to play against on Friday nights. Get about 3 games every 2 months that way. Also played in some tournaments, 2 at Geek Out Games in Central, SC, and one at Borderlands in Greenville. Both were very enjoyable and I fully intend to keep doing tournaments.
I'm also working on coming up with a more competitive list for tournaments. At my last one I went 2 for 3, but my wins were very narrow vs. Tyranids and Necrons. I could maybe have done better, after the day was over I was thinking about some decisions I made and feel like they weren't optimal.
I'm hoping my new list, based on some advice from the guy who beat me really badly, will be more effective. The units in it have the ability to provide cover fire for one another, and at least a couple of units have the ability to make a move to aggressively get across the battlefield and capture objectives. We'll see if I've done my homework right.
I don't play it against my sons, though. Our missions at home are much more challenging for me, because I try to take a very bland list - the sort of thing you'd see in actual combat, instead of something tailored for a raid or the spearhead of a new army-wide offensive.
Saw a list on Dakkadakka's forums today that really had me interested. Salamanders in 8th edition get to re-roll one to-hit die per unit, and one to-wound die per unit, PER TURN. So this guy created an army list that was all Salamanders veteran squads, 2- and 3-man units, with melta and plasma guns. And Razorbacks with twin assault cannons. It's stupidly overpowered. When his dudes dismount from a Razorback, they are two squads of three. They shoot and hit on 3+, and each squad can re-roll one to-hit die. Then they roll to wound, and each squad (of 3) can re-roll one to-wound die. It's amazingly well thought-up. The sergeants all have powerfists, too, so you can't just charge them and get rid of them. Because they're vets they get 3 S8 AP-3 Damage D3 attacks, and because the regular joes have chainswords, they each get 3 S4 AP- D1 attacks. If you end up in close combat with two squads, you're probably going to lose whatever you charged with. Even if it's Harlequins. Because re-rolls.
Anyway, wish I could find a forum that was talking about this new army list, and that would give me some feedback on my army list, but no such luck. Have to keep hunting.
